The Day the Earth Stood Still

January 5th 2009 15:02
I just can't help myself. I love a good movie where humankind faces complete annihilation at the hands of something we never even knew existed. It is such a facinating concept to me.

"The Day the Earth Stood Still" is based on the original movie made in 1951. This time it stars the ever dramatic Keanu Reeves as the humanoid alien, Klaatu, who has come to save the Earth, from us. He came to offer a warning originally, but is shot by a soldier as he tries to make contact with Dr. Helen Benson. He later speaks with a representative from his race that has been living on the planet for 70 years and is told that humans are destructive and will not change, only destroy themselves and the planet in time. Interestingly enough, this representative also has a certain respect for humankind, refusing to leave as all are destroyed, stating that they are his kind now and that he loves them nonetheless.

So we go on through the movie with Helen Benson driving Klaatu around, trying to keep him from the authorities that are so close behind them. Klaatu insights the beginning of the end for humankind during this trip. All the while, Helen is trying to convince him that humans can change and to just give us a chance. She even takes him to her Nobel prize winning colleagues house to let him convince him. Klaatu is somewhat intrigued by what John Cleese's character has to say, but allows many people to be killed nonetheless.

In the end, Klaatu sees how much love Helen has for her son and decides to stop the killing of humankind by sacrificing himself.

The film really makes humans out to be the bad guys. It shows Klaatu as a pretty peaceful and good guy at first and makes us out to be total jerks that truly shoot first and ask questions later and will absolutely not listen to what we are told until it is too late. I do believe this to be true to a certain degree, but I do have a bit more faith in humankind, at least I try to.

It is all a very interesting concept that can really apply to the world today. We are faced with the slow killing of our planet and we know it. What are we doing to change that and will we wait until it is too late?

Perhaps Klaatu could be seen as a metaphor: Let's all work together to NOT destory ourselves and our planet before we are presented with an ultimate in one sense or the other? Just a thought.
