Star Trek

June 14th 2009 04:37
There has been a lot of talk about this movie. The first movie to ever be premiered at the Sydney Opera house and it happened weeks before its release date. The anticipation was palpable.

I saw it at the IMAX. The first thing I wanted to do once it finished was to go see it again. There was so much to love about this movie but the best thing is that it is unexpectedly funny. Not just a bit funny but actual laugh out loud, soul warming funny. And I knew to expect a love story, but never anticipated the love story that was delivered.

I have to admit, I had that uncomfortable “I’m in a futuristic space movie” moment but JJ Abrams didn’t let me hang on to it for but a split second. It was a stroke of genius to reinvent the Star Fleet in an alternate space time continuum. Those of us that grew up with Captain James T Kirk commanding the USS Enterprise may have had difficulty accepting new actors in these incumbent roles. There were enough ties to the original to keep the trekkies happy but at the same time was completely fresh. Of course, the presence of Leonard Nimoy, the original Spock, added another level to the coolness of this movie. And of the lack of presence of William Schatner...he claims he was never approached, they claim he wanted too much money...whatever the truth, I don’t think that Denny Crane, though an entertaining character, could ever command the respect of Star Fleet command.

As for the new blood, give casting director April Webster a medal, what a fabulous team of actors, all totally believable in their characters. Chris Pine made for a decent version of the wayward lost son finding his way in life but he was somewhat overshadowed but the pure likeability of Karl Urban in the role of Bones and who couldn’t love Simon Pegg in his role as the brilliant but ill-fated Montgomery Scott. The ability of Zachary Quinto to literally become Spock was remarkable. He truly captured the essence of Spock, the looks, the logic and not to mention the eyebrows.

Let's face it, you don’t get to see many movies quite like this, so if you haven’t seen it, go look up a session time, this one’s worth seeing on the big screen!!
