Ice Age 3 - Dawn of the Dinosaurs

In these times when animated movies are a force to be reckoned with at the box office, viewer expectations are high. While largely aimed at the younger generation, the animated movie will usually deliver a good dose humour that sails over a youngster’s head but hits the mark with the older audience. Unfortunately, grown-ups, Ice Age 3 forgot about you this time…but don’t worry, your kids will love it.
In Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Manny and Ellie are expecting their first child. Their buddy, Diego is concerned that he’s losing his edge as a hunter by settling down into family life. When Diego indicates to Sid that he’s thinking of leaving the group, Sid begins to feel all alone, alone, alone (cue, all by myself….). So when he discovers three eggs lying unattended on the ice, he decides to adopt them and create his own family.
Sid has more than he bargained for after the eggs hatch into baby dinosaurs. When the babies' natural mother appears to retrieve her offspring, Sid is unable to tear himself away from his children and winds up being kidnapped by the mother-saur. His unlikely group of friends must set out to retrieve Sid from beneath the ice, where unbeknown to them, an entire world of dinosaurs and a tropical paradise exists.
Underneath the ice, the valiant troupe is being attacked from all angles, and is in imminent danger when a slightly unstable weasel named Buck comes to the rescue. This spirited fellow has been living with the dinosaurs since he escaped death by stealing the tooth of Rudy, the most feared of all the dinosaurs. Buck, a character loosely based on Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow, agrees to lead them on the expedition to retrieve Sid from lava falls. Will they succeed in rescuing Sid? Will Ellie give birth safely to a baby mammoth? Will Diego decide to leave the group to fulfil his hunting instincts? In a sensational climatic finish each of our characters deals with their personal issues and here’s the spoiler…..there’s a happy ending.
Parents be warned! The storyline does have a reverse educational effect. Questions may be raised regarding the atmosphere, the earth’s geology, basic laws of physics and the food chain. While there is no doubt, it’s sensational for the imagination; the makers of Ice Age took a real departure from reality here and will disappoint some fans in doing so.
The storyline and the humour in Dawn of the Dinosaurs are definitely aimed at the younger audience but what does save this movie for the adult viewer is the digital 3D. When Sid’s falling, you’re falling, when Buck’s reaching, he’s nearly grabs you and if you stretch out you can nearly grab that damn acorn. It’s an exciting technology, with endless potential and while the boundaries of the 3D feature weren’t stretched in Ice Age 3, there is still sufficient cool factor there to warrant putting on the glasses.
Ice Age 3 – Dawn of the Dinosaurs is a lot of fun for the kids. Perhaps we adults have been a little bit spoiled with the quality of content and humour in animated movies lately and I’ve come to expect too much. Or perhaps, global warming has simply melted the ice out of the Ice Age.
